DJ Sets by Maria Chavez, Valentina, & Kristy la rAt. Back at it for Part 2
Maria Chávez, born in Lima, Peru, is best known as a conceptual sound artist, abstract turntablist and DJ. Chavez started her DJ career as a teen in 1997 and has since shared her extensive collection of house and techno with audiences worldwide alongside iconic electronic musicians like Simian Mobile Disco, Demdike Stare, DJ Bone and others.
In addition to her sound and visual practices, she’s DJed at major venues and institutions including Public Records, Le Bain at The Standard Hotel, MoMA, MoMA PS1, EXIT Glasgow, Galerie ZDB, and across the world in cities like Basel, Istanbul, and Rewire Festival in The Hague, Netherlands and more. Her unique sound can be heard online via The Lot Radio (NYC), NTS Radio (London), Refuge Worldwide (Berlin), SoundCloud and more.
Valentina is a community organizer and DJ, creating space and opportunity for artists & musicians for over a decade. Digging in their favorite record stores for over 12 years they have curated an arsenal of the obscure and evocative. Educating dance floors with their all vinyl sets Valentina is guaranteed to keep people guessing what’s next as she crafts her brujeria of sound.
Kristy la rAt Kristy la rAt is a DJ and cultural organizer in DC, who sees dance parties as rituals to cultivate connection, care, and coming undone together. A proud DMV local, Kristy co-founded the annual Booty Rex queer pride party over a decade ago, as well as her two DJ collectives: Anthology of Booty, featuring queer global booty beats, and Maracuyeah, a party + platform for underground Latinx dance music & live acts. Her genre-bouncing sets play with bass, femme club sensibilities, queer unruliness, and the creative expanses of the familiar, remixed.
