Cheryl Dunye’s bitingly funny, deeply personal feature debut THE WATERMELON WOMAN (1996) is a landmark look at the black lesbian experience, starring the director as an artist struggling to make a documentary about Fae Richards, a beautiful and elusive 1930s black film actress.

LAVENDER EVOLUTIONS is a collective of Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Color cultivating spaces for celebration, healing, and community in the DMV, Piscataway land. Drawing inspiration from queer history and community collaboration, Lavender Evolutions has been organizing an eclectic mix of programs to bring Queer People of Color together since the summer of 2022. BRITT SANKOFA is a filmmaker, writer, and artist from Washington DC. Her works have been featured in the SAAM ‘Women Filmmakers Festival” (2019), Virginia Film Festival (2018), Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival (2019), and the Afrikana Independent Film Festival (2017, 2019). Britt has a huge passion for black history and cinema and works towards building
relationships between the two.
