Written by Maya Angelou, “Georgia, Georgia” is one of the earliest feature films written by a Black woman to receive a theatrical release. The film centers Georgia (Diana Sands), a Black American singer, on tour in Sweden. She quickly meets a white war deserter who captures her eye. In her romance and isolation, she questions how Blackness has shaped her being. Helmed by a Swedish director, the film is visually disjointed as it doesn’t wade into the nuances of being a Black woman which is essential to the film.
