Pharaoh Haqq Presents: I Called Him Morgan

Kasper Collin

On a snowy night in February 1972, celebrated jazz musician Lee Morgan was shot dead by his wife Helen during a gig at a club in New York City. The murder sent shockwaves through the jazz community, and the memory of the event still haunts those who knew the Morgans. This documentary by Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin (My Name Is Albert Ayler) is a love letter to two unique personalities and the music that brought them together. A film about love, jazz and America with cinematography by Bradford Young (DOP, Selma).

“SUAVE AND POIGNANT… A DELICATE HUMAN DRAMA ABOUT LOVE, AMBITION AND THE GLORIES OF MUSIC… AS SIMPLE AND MYSTERIOUS AS A MURDER BALLAD… IT EXPANDS THE SCOPE OF LIFE AND DISTILLS ITS BEAUTY AND ITS PAIN.” – A.O. Scott, NY Times

“KASPER COLLIN’S BRILLIANT FILM PLAYS LIKE FIRST-RATE DRAMA” – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

“THE GREATEST JAZZ DOCUMENTARY SINCE LET’S GET LOST… SPELLBINDING, MERCURIAL, HALLUCINATORY, EXUBERANT, TRAGIC…” – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

“A VISUAL AND TEXTURAL TRIUMPH… IN COMPLETE SYMPATHY WITH THE MOST WISTFUL CUTS OF ITS SUBJECT’S DISCOGRAPHY” – Guy Lodge, Variety

“IT’S BOTH A PORTRAIT OF PEOPLE AND A HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE, A VIRTUAL VISION OF AMERICAN TIMES—THE LIVES OF BLACK AMERICANS IN THE AGE OF JIM CROW AND DE-FACTO DISCRIMINATION IN THE NORTH—AND OF THE ARTISTRY AND PERSONAL STYLE THAT AROSE IN RESPONSE TO THEM.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker
